Ian Micheal's work is expressive, perceptive, and raw. The moment captured by his paintings displays a visceral quality as he releases the true essence of his subject matter. This desire to show what should be normal: just being, living completely free of any judgement, led him toward the exploration of his current subject matter. His paintings of the black figure or couples often suggest deep affection, telling the story of intimate relationships with humor and sympathy, but with a poetic indirectness that allows for multiple coexisting stories and interpretations.
